Streaming
This is a detailed guide to how we set up to be able to stream a match at Holyport on YouTube. This set-up is for a single camera mainly based on the set-up of Jon Peterson of Petworth who has been extremely helpful. His streaming at Petworth I thought is the best single camera streaming I have seen so far. Thanks also to Ryan Carey who has for many years now been the man behind all the excellent streaming of the Opens.
This is how it looks at Holyport:
With the camera placed here:
The set-up is not complex, but it is quite fiddly and there are alternative ways to set up. If other clubs share their set-ups we will post them here too so you can choose which set-up suits you best.
The equipment and set up described allows for a second camera to be added but if you want to have more than that you would need a different video capture device as the J5 I have used only has 2 video inputs.
Set Up Instructions
Hardware
Set up the equipment as described in the set-up diagram below (list of equipment to buy at the end)
Ensure that the mini-HDMI-HDMI from GoPro is plugged into HDMI A in J5, and the USB-C which connects the J5 and the Mac mini is plugged into the J5 in the HOST port.
Software – OBS – Setting up sources
- On OBS, In the sources window hit the plus symbol and select “video capture device”
- Under create new you can rename the source if you like such as “GoPro” or leave it and click ok. Click Device on next window and select “J5-CAPTURE”, then hit “OK”
- To connect the microphone, under sources on OBS select “Audio input capture”. Under create new you can give it a name then hit ok. Under device select “J5-audio” and hit ok. Ensure the audio switch next to HDMI A is turned on, the microphone should now be picking up sound and there should be an audio input capture window next to sources which moves when sound is detected by the microphone.
OBS will remember these settings and so this step is only required at set up.
Streaming instructions
- Unplug everything from the GoPro (it can be temperamental) – Turn on the GoPro and put it into video mode. It should not be recording just on the Video Setting
- Plug in the USBC, Mini HDMI and Microphone to the GoPro. The GoPro screen will turn black but that is ok the GoPro will still be on. You can use the mobile App if you want to change any settings
- On OBS go to settings in bottom right corner and then stream and check that your YouTube channel is connected and that you are signed in
- You should now be able to see the display from the GoPro on OBS. If not, then ensure that on the J5, the green light above HDMI A is on and the light to the left of A on the right-hand side of the J5 is on. If the light on the right-hand side A is not on, press the A button to switch the input being displayed.
- If the GoPro appears to show the recorded videos press the power button until the symbol of the GoPro is highlighted before pressing the button on the top of the GoPro to select it. The Footage shown on OBS should now be what the camera sees.
- The footage from the GoPro may have a battery life and an SD card symbol on it to fix this press the power button on the GoPro enough times so that the highlighted symbol in the OBS window is the eye with the line through it. When the eye is selected press the button on the top of the GoPro to select this mode. The battery and SD card symbols will disappear and only the GoPro footage should be visible
- On YouTube view the YouTube channel by clicking on the logo in top right and select “your channel”. In the top right again select the camera symbol with the plus in it and select “Go Live”.
- On OBS select “start streaming”, a window will then pop up and select “manage broadcast”. Under the “Create new broadcast” window press the green circle in the top left so the options to create broadcast appear at the bottom. Fill in this window with an appropriate stream title and description. You can also select a thumbnail for the stream and choose who is able to view the stream. If it’s public anyone can view it, if it’s private only you can see it. When you’re happy with the settings select “create broadcast and start streaming”. You will now be streaming the GoPro video and audio from the mic.
- When you would like to stop the stream, on OBS select stop streaming. This will then automatically stop the YouTube stream.
Monitor and manage the stream
On YouTube press the calendar on the left-hand side which is labelled “manage”. You should be able to see the stream you have set up on OBS and it should say it is LIVE. Click on the name of the stream to view the stream. There may be a delay between the footage on OBS and the footage being streamed on YouTube. You can view the analytics of the stream and the chat in this YouTube window.
GoPro settings and troubleshooting
- Once connected to the HDMI the GoPro screens go black so changing settings is easiest done using the mobile app GoPro Quick app
- We had a problem that the GoPro automatically turns itself off and so you need to change the setting
go to Preferences>General>Auto Power Off and set to “Never”
- The resolution settings we are using are 1080p, 60fps. You can set the GoPro to a higher resolution but the J5 encodes at a maximum of 1080p
- We are using “Linear” as the lens setting as it gives full coverage of the court from where we place the camera, the wide settings made the court walls look curved, you may need to play with the lens settings depending on your camera placement
- In Preferences>Regional we’ve turned off GPS and we’ve turned off video stabilisation, both of these are to try to reduce how hot the camera gets.
- Sometimes we have not been able to turn the GoPro on and had to take out of the MediaMod, take out the battery and then back in again and then it restarts.
Camera position
We have chosen right hand side of dedans and like the view from a wall bracket meaning the camera is about 2/3 of the way up.
Microphone
We will be experimenting with different types of microphone and positioning. The current set up has very good sound but picks up all the conversations in the dedans.
Scoreboard
I do not have a solution for this at the moment. It may be that the scoreboard will link better to a Windows PC than a Mac
Location and cabling
Some clubs have all of the streaming kit in the dedans. We decided to use the Mac as our main PC on the pro desk and so decided to have a 15m HDMI cable from the dedans to the pro desk where the J5 and Mac would sit. If you have a longer run than that, for example with a camera in the Grille then you will need HDMI repeaters.

Mac Mini – 16GB RAM preferred but 8GB should be plenty. A PC of course works just as well.
Software – OBS is free and works on both Mac and PC
